Koeman says his Barcelona will be more defensive
The era Ronald Koeman on the Barcelona bench started with a 3: 1 victory against Gimnastic de Tarragona in a friendly match on Saturday.
After Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring in the fifth minute, penalties converted by Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho were enough for the team of Koeman to achieve an easy victory.
Barcelona lined up with a 4-2-3-1 formation. A system rarely used at this club in the past.
In the second half, he changed the entire starting lineup.
Sergio Busquets and Carles Alena started the game as defensive midfielders. Before being replaced by Frenkie de Jong and Riqui Puig.
Koeman said after the match that having two players in such a role on the field would enable his team to attack more in different ways.
“(Barcelona) may be different and more defensive than you have seen it in recent years. But our goal is to move the ball. Keep it in control and find space to play behind rival midfielders.” Koeman said after the game.
“I think this team can do it because we have midfielders to play this way.” he added.
