Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher: UEFA is hoping for Real to eliminate City
Former legendary Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that UEFA hopes Real Madrid eliminates Manchester City from the Champions League. Following the penalty given to the English club.
Pep Guardiola’s side will face Real Madrid in the Champions League this month and according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, UEFA hopes for Real Madrid to win.
Manchester City is punished on February 14 by UEFA to suspend European competitions for the next two seasons, 2020/21 and 2021/22, and the gave them €30m fine for violating UEFA rules on financial honesty. (FFP).
The UEFA Inquiry Chamber found evidence that the club was lying in financial reports about the money they took from sponsors from 2012 to 2016, saying sponsors gave them more money that they actually did.
“I can’t believe Manchester City is in the race right now. I’m not saying this as a Liverpool fan, but what if City wins the race this season? They are favorites to win. They are one of the best teams in Europe, ” Carragher said.
“He would make this race to make fun of him. However, UEFA will be hoping City will be beaten by Real Madrid – it will hopefully happen. For instance, can you imagine UEFA officials handing the trophy to a Man City player? ”
“The first thing Pep Guardiola would ask after the conference match would be, ‘Is this a fake win?’ The merits of the cup would be in question – should they be in the race? They are in the race now that if they win the title. ”
“In conclusion, I think UEFA should have either left Manchester City out of the race immediately or should have left that decision by the end of the season.”
