Roberto Carlos: I was close to transferring to Chelsea
Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos has revealed that he was very close to a transfer to Chelsea in 2007. But has indicated that the transfer failed in the final moments.
The former defender, Roberto Carlos was left without a club at the time. Having parted ways with Real Madrid after 11 successful years at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
“I had two proposals – from Fenerbahce and Chelsea. “It didn’t work out with Chelsea, so I transferred to Fenerbahce.” Carlos said in an interview with Goal.
“But I was very close to transferring to Chelsea. “We actually agreed, and I just had to go there and sign the contract.”
“It all happened just a week before I was transferred to Fenerbahce. I went to Paris to meet with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and former CEO Peter Kenyon.
“Unfortunately, everything failed in the last moments, just before the final, which often happens in the world of football. There was a problem with the lawyer. ”
“However, we had reached an agreement on everything. I am 100 percent sure that I would have done a good job in the Premier League and that the league would have adapted to my characteristics.”
Carlos also revealed that he had been close to moving to England at the age of 22, when Aston Villa were interested in him, but in the end they could not afford to transfer the Brazilian.
