Simeone: We started beating Liverpool on the road before the game started
Coach Diego Simeone was speechless at how Atletico Madrid fans wait for Liverpool’s arrival at Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday. And believes it was precisely this atmosphere that was key to winning the first match of the 1/8 Champions League final.
Atletico Madrid had won only one of their last seven games in all competitions. However, Simeone’s side won despite not being considered a favorite. The winning goal was scored by Saul Niguez and the Madrilen will take the win 1: 0 for the return match at Anfield.
Fans fill the streets around the stadium, lit fireworks and sang loudly. As the European and world champion bus arrived for the first match of the 1/8 Champions final.
In this match, Liverpool had possession of the ball for most of the time. While Simeone was constantly encouraging fans in the stadium to cheer on the Atletico player.
After the match, Simeone says fans play a big part in the outcome of the match. Starting with the reception that was organized on the street outside the stadium.
“We started to win on the streets around the stadium. In my eight years here, I haven’t seen such a wait, ” says Simeone in an interview with Movistar.
“The atmosphere was exciting, it made you play. The team responded with a great deal of good work, as they did in the game against Valencia.
“It wasn’t the best night because we didn’t win the title. However, there are some nights you can never forget and this is one of them. The best team in the world comes to visit you with a great run of victories and you beat them. “
