Messi apologized to his teammates for the red card
Lionel Messi has apologized to his teammates after being punished with a red card in Barcelona’s loss against Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
Barca looked like they were on track to win the first trophy under Ronald Koeman. After taking the lead twice thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann. But a late goal by Asier Villalibre sent the game in extra time.
Inaki Williams gave the lead to Athletic Club. Who beat Real Madrid in the semi-final – in the 94th minute. And when time was running out and Barcelona were losing 3: 2, Messi lost his mind.
The Catalan captain attacked Villalibre angrily and therefore took a red card.
The referee had not seen the incident. But after the intervention of the VAR room and the review of the case, the Argentine was directly punished with the red. This was Messi’s first red card in 753 appearances for Barcelona
According to Spanish media, Messi was extremely disappointed and had apologized to his teammates in the locker room after the match.
Messi, 33 years-old, will be suspended for two safe matches. But his suspension could be doubled. Depending on how the Spanish Football Federation Disciplinary Committee evaluates his action.
He will serve the suspension in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
Therefore, Messi will miss against Cornella. The team from the third category – in the King’s Cup on Thursday. And in next weekend’s match against Elche in La Liga.
If his suspension is doubled, then he would miss the next round of the Copa del Rey if Barcelona beat Cornella. As well as against Athletic in La Liga at the Camp Nou on 31 January.
