Sweden’s victory against the United States might not have reached the level of a David beating Goliath upset, but it essentially has made it a wide open race for the 2023 World Cup championship.

Sweden now takes on Japan in the quarterfinals as it seeks to reach the semifinals for the third time in four appearances.

Sweden won Group G after beating South Africa, Italy and Argentina by scoring nine goals. In the knockout round, the country had its historic match against the USWNT where Lina Hurtig scored the game-winning penalty kick.

Japan marched to the quarterfinals by winning Group C with victories over Zambia, Costa Rica and Spain, scoring a total of 11 goals. Japan beat Norway 3-1 in the Round of 16. Hinata Miyazawa is the tournament’s leading goal-scorer so far with five.

Both teams have played in every World Cup since its establishment in 1991. Sweden has finished in the top three four times and hosted the 1995 tournament. In 2011, Japan beat Sweden 3-1 in the semifinals en route to its first title.
