Wolves' Prince arrest from drug warrant in Texas

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Taurean Prince was arrested in Miami on Thursday due to a fugitive out-of-state warrant stemming from a traffic stop in Texas in May, according to a statement from Arlington police.

Prince was pulled over in Dallas because of an expired registration. Police say they found two handguns, a vape pen containing THC and a cannister of marijuana inside Prince’s car.

Prince was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. Arlington police say test results on the vape pen came back recently, which is why the warrant for Prince’s arrest took three months.

Prince was ultimately arrested at Miami International Airport and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Thursday night, according to inmate records. He was granted bond Friday.

Kent Schaffer, Prince’s attorney, told People Magazine that “apparently in the last week and a half they issued a warrant for his arrest because they recovered 1/100th of an ounce of THC, which is probably the smallest amount you can have.”

In a statement Thursday, the Timberwolves said they are aware of the situation and are gathering more information.

The team signed Prince to a two-year, $16 million contract extension in June.

This past season, Prince established himself as a solid rotational player — on a Timberwolves team that returned to the Western Conference playoffs — averaging 7.3 points and 2.5 rebounds a game in 17 minutes.
